The incident happened around 10:45 a.m. in a housing unit, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees the facility. At the time, inmates were “participating in recreation” and “being actively monitored,” authorities said.

The jail was immediately locked down while deputies used “less-lethal options to swiftly and safely get the situation under control,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office estimated 30 inmates were involved in the incident. Six were taken to area hospitals with injuries and were listed in stable condition Friday afternoon.

Four deputies suffered minor injuries while breaking up the brawl, authorities said.

“I’m grateful to the sheriff’s office personnel who acted swiftly to stop the fight and ensure the safety of the correctional facility and everyone inside of the facility,” Sheriff Christina Corpus said in a statement. “Their actions undoubtedly prevented more serious injuries and ensured the situation was quickly under control.”

An investigation is underway into the incident, and investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the fight, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said the facility remained secure during the incident and there was no threat to public safety.
