Boys lead CHP officers on 100-mph chase before gunfire and getting nabbed

Two boys, first spotted in a reported stolen Audi sedan who led officers on a 100-plus-mph chase that apparently ended with a PIT maneuver, prompting one to then exchange gunfire with authorities, were arrested in Upland late Sunday night, Sept. 22, according to officials and media reports.

One boy was caught shortly after the pursuit ended on Euclid Avenue.

The other fled, firing at at least one officer and breaking into a home on the 300 block of North Laurel Avenue, where he barricaded himself, said Rodrigo Jimenez, an officer and spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. The home was occupied.

From there, he exchanged gunfire with officers, who had surrounded the home, a second time, authorities said.

The boy came out and was struck by gunfire; he laid on the ground, with officers instructing him to crawl toward them and to not reach for his gun.

Officers approached and handcuffed the boy before dragging him away and eventually loading him into an ambulance for a hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.

The CHP did not reveal the boys’ ages.

The pursuit had began around 11:30 p.m. when California Highway Patrol officers tried to stop the Audi A3 on the 10 Freeway, near Indian Boulevard in Claremont, but the driver instead got off of the 10 and drove the wrong way on surface streets near West Covina Parkway, before getting back on the freeway against the flow of traffic, according to the CHP.

Fox 11 reported that the chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph. The PIT maneuver left the navy Audi sedan pushed up against a curb, with a damaged back bumper, shows video from Key News Network, a freelance newsgathering group that sometimes works with the Southern California News Group.
