The crash about 4:45 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 580 happened just west of the Grant Line Road exit and killed a 66-year-old Tracy man. Authorities did not identify him immediately, pending notification of relatives.
That man drove a black Tesla Model Y and died at the scene.
In a statement, CHP spokesperson Officer Tyler Hahn said a 21-year-old Stockton man drove a Honda Accord into the back of the Tesla. Hahn said indications at the scene led the CHP to believe the man was driving under the influence, and they arrested him upon his release from Valley Care Medical Center in Pleasanton.
The Honda driver suffered injuries the CHP defined as moderate and was evaluated at the hospital.
