De La Salle holds off Grant-Sacramento, improves to 4-0

De La Salle built what seemed like a commanding four-touchdown lead in the first half Friday night at Sacramento powerhouse Grant.

But by the middle of the third quarter, the large advantage had been cut in half and Grant had the ball after a defensive stop.

De La Salle ultimately restored order, forcing three turnovers and getting two touchdown runs by Duece Jones-Drew, and returned home with a 47-20 victory.

Jaden Jefferson’s two touchdown runs in the first quarter gave De La Salle a 14-0 lead. Quarterback Brayden Knight followed with two TD runs himself to widen the margin to 28-0 for the Bay Area News Group’s top-ranked team.

Grant ditched its running get to ignite a struggling offense and the result was the first points De La Salle’s defense has allowed through the first four games.

The Pacers pulled to within 34-14 at halftime and added another touchdown in the third quarter to get to within 34-20.

But then came the turnovers and, for De La Salle, some much-needed scoring from Jones-Drew.

De La Salle improved to 4-0. Grant fell to 2-3.

After three consecutive road games, DLS returns home Friday to play another blueblood from the Sac-Joaquin Section, St. Mary’s-Stockton.
