Castro Valley fire breaks out, but is quickly nearing containment

A fire in Castro Valley grew to 10 acres Monday afternoon before firefighters halted its expansion, according to a Cal Fire announcement on X.

The fire, named the Palo Fire, is near the intersection of Palomares Road and Ewing Terrace — near several ranches, farms and open space preserves.

It could be seen sending thick smoke plumes skyward from an observation point on Wiedemann Hill in Cal Fire SCU footage.

As of around 3:40 p.m., the fire was about 60% contained, according to Cal Fire.
