PITTSBURG – Pittsburg appointed Maria Aliotti to serve as interim city manager while the city actively recruits for a permanent replacement.
Aliotti, who is currently assistant city manager, will start the interim role on Sept. 5. City Manager Garrett Evans announced his retirement in July. His last day will be Sept. 4.
Pittsburg hired Peckham & McKenney, an executive search firm, to help with the recruitment process for a permanent city manager.
“The recruitment is actively underway, with applications accepted through September 14, 2025. The City Council anticipates completing the recruitment and appointment process in the fall of this year,” the city said in a statement.
Over the course of her 23-year career with the city, Aliotti has held various roles, including administrative analyst, project manager, redevelopment or development manager, community services director, and, for the past five years, assistant city manager.
She also served on the California Redevelopment Association Brownfields Committee.
Aliotti, who grew up in the city and graduated from Pittsburg High School, has also contributed to redevelopment, municipal planning, budget development, and the implementation of strategic initiatives, according to the city.
Most recently, she played a leadership role in presenting and guiding the adoption of Pittsburg’s 2025-2026 operating budget.
Her other accomplishments include creating the First Time Homebuyer and Commercial Rehabilitation Loan programs, managing the renovation of the historic California Theatre and the construction of Plaza Marina.
She was also instrumental in establishing the Community Facilities District that funded the construction of the Pittsburg Center BART Station.
“I am honored to step into the role of Interim City Manager and continue serving our community during this transition,” Aliotti said in a statement. “I look forward to working closely with our dedicated City Council, staff, and community partners to ensure continuity of services and to carry forward the momentum of progress.”
Pittsburg Mayor Jelani Killings said Aliotti has been a “valued and dedicated leader” for many years, and the City Council has full confidence in her ability to guide Pittsburg.
“Her deep knowledge of our operations, commitment to fiscal responsibility, and passion for serving our community make her the right choice to serve as Interim City Manager,” Killings said in a statement.
