Redwood City police arrest vandalism suspect accused of marking targets with an “R” (edited)

A man suspected of vandalizing more than a dozen downtown Redwood City businesses with a signature “R” tag was arrested by police Thursday, according to a Redwood City Police Department press release.

Redwood City police arrested Roman Leoncontreras on suspicion of vandalizing 14 businesses between July 13 and 14, leaving a signature “R” – a symbol for Leoncontreras’s first name, according to police – and an outstanding warrant.

Several businesses provided surveillance footage showing a suspect etching the letter “R” into the window glass of their businesses, police said.

Around noon on Thursday, one of the victims flagged down Redwood City police officers to identify the suspect in the downtown area. Officers approached Leoncontreras for further investigation and arrested him at the scene, according to police.

Police booked Leoncontreras into San Mateo County Jail on multiple charges of felony vandalism and an outstanding warrant.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information about the incidents should contact Redwood City Sgt. Victor Figueroa at 650-780-7621.
