SAN JOSE — Police have announced three new traffic death investigations involving separate crashes — two of them hit and runs — in May and July in which the victims’ died in the days or weeks after the collisions occurred.
The most recent crash was reported Sunday at 4:33 a.m., when a man driving a black 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage was eastbound on Capitol Expressway and passing through the intersection at Senter Road when he hit a woman crossing Capitol Expressway, according to San Jose police.
The victim was taken to a hospital and stabilized with life-threatening injuries, but on Wednesday, police said they were notified that she had died. The driver was not injured and stopped at the crash scene.
On July 10, officers were called to a crash reported at 11:05 p.m. near Quimby Road and Rigoletto Drive. Investigators found that the driver of a 2004 Honda Accord was northbound on Quimby, accompanied by a passenger, when he rear-ended a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek stopped at a red light. The impact pushed the Subaru into a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder also stopped at the light.
The man driving the Honda ran from the wreck, police said, and there is no indication he was located. The 28-year-old man riding with him was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was initially stabilized. But the next day, police said, he died from his injuries.
Police also announced a death from a May 30 crash near Sunset Avenue and Cinderella Lane. It was reported at 8:51 a.m. that morning; a man was driving a white 2019 Chevy Silverado heading south on Sunset when he hit a man in a crosswalk, police said.

The injured 82-year-old man was taken to a hospital with what were initially described as non-life threatening injuries. But police said detectives were notified that the man died Tuesday.
The Chevy driver, who fled the scene after the crash, was arrested June 16 on suspicion of hit and run. Police said in light of the victim’s death, they expect that charge to be amended to include vehicular manslaughter.
Each of the victims’ names were not released by police, pending their formal identification and notification of their next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office. The three new cases mark the 15th, 16th and 17th traffic deaths investigated by San Jose police this year, and bring the number of pedestrian deaths to 9.
