Child dies, 4 injured after tree falls at California summer camp

A child died after a tree fell at a summer camp near Calabasas on Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities responded just after 2:50 p.m. to a camp at King Gillette Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Five people were injured, including a child who was taken to a hospital in critical condition and two other victims who were transported with minor injuries. The additional two victims declined further medical treatment, the fire department said.

One of the victims, a young child, later died, according to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.

“This is a profoundly difficult time for our entire MRCA community and the parks community of the Santa Monica Mountains,” the authority said in a statement. “We grieve alongside the family and are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the situation.
