Suspects arrested in San Leandro restaurant burglary

SAN LEANDRO — Two suspects were arrested early Thursday in a burglary of a popular restaurant where cash registers and money were stolen,  police said.

At least one other suspect was being sought as of Thursday afternoon.

Police said officers responded about 3:18 a.m. Thursday to an alarm activation at La Piñata restaurant, 2699 Merced St..

San Leandro police Lt. Abe Teng said the suspects gained entry through a roof window.

The suspects fled with two cash registers and the money inside them, police said.

Multiple suspects were seen climbing over fences to flee into neighboring business areas near Fairway Drive. Officers set up a perimeter and deployed a drone to provide aerial surveillance.

Because of the large size of the perimeter, San Leandro police requested assistance from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and Hayward Police Department to help in the search for the suspects. Hayward police sent officers and a K9 unit.

After an extensive search, two Oakland men, one 35 and the other 22, were located and taken into custody on separate business properties adjacent or near the restaurant just before 6 a.m., police said. The perimeter was shut down a few minutes later with no further arrests.

It was not immediately clear if any of the loss was recovered.
