Liljegren sustained an upper-body injury in the Sharks’ 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday and will not be eligible to return until at least Oct. 22, meaning he will miss at least the next three games.

The Sharks play the Utah Mammoth on Friday in their first road game of the season, host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, and begin a four-game road trip against the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

Liljegren did not practice on Wednesday and was considered day-to-day at the time, according to Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky.

John Klingberg, another right-shot defenseman, also did not practice on Wednesday, but was briefly on the ice Thursday before the team’s flight to Salt Lake City. He did not finish the practice, and it was not immediately known if he would be able to play against the Mammoth.

On Tuesday, Klingberg did not play the final 5:12 of regulation time, and Liljegren did not take a shift in the final 6:13, as the Sharks (0-1-2) lost their third straight game to begin the season.

The 22-year-old Iorio, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, was a 2021 second-round draft pick by Washington and played in nine games with the Capitals, three in 2022-23 and six in 2023-24. He has primarily played with the AHL’s Hershey Bears in each of the past three seasons, most recently finishing third among team blue-liners with 20 points in 67 games in 2024-25, setting AHL career highs in goals, game-winning goals, and games played.
