SAN MATEO — Two men were arrested in connection with an alleged carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon in June, authorities said.
The two suspects — one identified as the primary suspect, and the second identified as the driver who brought him to the scene — were each booked into jail on suspicion of carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon, according to a news release from the San Mateo Police Department.
Just before 5 a.m. on June 8, police responded to reports of a stolen vehicle, authorities said. The incident occurred on the 700 block of South Humboldt Street.
The victim told police that he had been walking away from his parked and idling vehicle when he saw another vehicle pull up next to it, authorities said. A person exited the vehicle and entered the victim’s vehicle.
When the victim attempted to pull the suspect out of the driver’s seat, a physical altercation broke out and the suspect lunged at the victim with a knife, authorities said. The victim was not injured.
The suspect then drove away in the victim’s car, and the vehicle he had arrived in fled the scene, authorities said.

Following an investigation lasting several months by SMPD’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, police identified a 25-year-old resident of Oakland as the primary suspect and a 22-year-old resident of Oakland as the driver of the suspect vehicle, authorities said.
The primary suspect was in custody for an unrelated incident and had carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon charges added to his booking sheet, police said.
The driver was located with the “assistance” of the California National Guard, authorities said. SMPD has an analyst from the guard assigned to work on narcotics investigations through the governor’s office, and they conducted surveillance because one of the suspects was previously involved in a narcotics investigation, said Andrew Peek, the department’s public information officer.
