One student wounded in stabbing attack at California middle school library

A girl was stabbed twice in the Coronado Middle School library Tuesday morning, and the suspected assailant — a boy who is a fellow seventh-grader — was taken into police custody, authorities said.

A student on a stretcher was seen being transported from the school by Coronado firefighters. Police said she was taken to a hospital.

Coronado police said officers responded to the campus on F Avenue about 10:20 a.m. for “an incident involving two students.” The department posted on social media that there was “no active threat to students or staff.” The school was not locked down, but officers performed a security sweep of the campus. Officers also temporarily blocked off traffic on F Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets.

Police issued an updated statement in the afternoon, saying that investigators had “interviewed several witnesses to the attack,” which police said happened in the library during a class break.

“During the altercation, the male suspect stabbed the female victim twice with a pocketknife,” the department said. “The victim was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital. The suspect is currently in custody.”

Citing the ages of the students involved, the department said it would not release further identifying information. “We thank the Coronado school community for their support and cooperation as the investigation continues.”

In a message sent to parents Tuesday, the middle school called it “an isolated incident.”

“One student sustained an injury as a result of the incident and is currently being transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment,” the school said in the statement, which the district provided to the Union-Tribune. “Out of respect for the student’s privacy, we will not be releasing further details at this time.”

The message from the middle school said “there is no larger threat to the broader student body or staff.” It also said the school was “cooperating fully with local authorities as they review the matter.”
