Here are this week’s top matchups:
Thursday
Lincoln-San Jose (5-0, 0-0) at Branham (4-1, 0-0), 7:15 p.m.: A compelling league opener in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division pits two San Jose schools with designs on contending for the title. Lincoln has rounded into form behind Kyan Phillips, a four-year varsity player who has impressive size and speed at 6-foot, 190 pounds. Phillips has 447 rushing yards and 315 receiving yards this year. Branham sophomore QB Andrew Ho has been strong in his first season as a varsity starter, throwing for 903 yards to an array of targets, including seniors Brayden Hodges and Michael Murphy. Murphy also leads Branham on the ground with 575 rushing yards. HSRatings.com projects a 42-35 Branham win. — Christian Babcock
Washington-Fremont (3-1, 0-0) vs. Irvington (4-1, 0-0) at Tak Fudenna Stadium, 7 p.m.: It might be a de facto home game for Washington – Tak Fudenna Stadium serves as a universal field for the entire Fremont Unified School District but sits on Washington’s campus. But Irvington, the nominal home team, should be more than capable of giving the Huskies a game. The Vikings have a talented junior QB in Vivaan Tiwari, two strong senior running backs in Ruben Sanchez and Santino Sandoval and good wideouts in Gabriel Aruwah and Ethan Insixiengmay. Washington has standout skill players in WR/FS Joseph Guerra and RB Cameron Redd. HSRatings.com projects a 40-35 Irvington win. — Christian Babcock
Woodside (5-0, 0-0) at Hillsdale (2-3, 0-0), 7 p.m.: Hillsdale has had an upper hand in its series with Woodside, including victories the past two seasons, but it could be different when the teams meet in this PAL Ocean Division opener. Woodside dominated its nonleague competition, winning all five games by no fewer than 21 points. The Wildcats have four players who have rushed for at least 150 yards, led by Daniel Torres. The senior has 466 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground and 11 receptions for 312 yards and four TDs. Evan Frampton has also been productive, rushing for 345 yards and four touchdowns. Hillsdale is coming off a 17-14 loss against Burlingame two weeks ago. The Knights have wins over Terra Nova 27-6 and Overfelt 13-12. Jacob Bonner leads Hillsdale in rushing with 414 yards and four TDs. Brady Skidmore has 13 receptions for 210 yards and two TDs. HSRatings.com picks Woodside to win 35-8. – Darren Sabedra
Friday
No. 9 Archbishop Mitty (4-1, 2-0) at No. 14 St. Francis (1-4, 1-1), 7 p.m.: Mitty has been one of the Bay Area’s surprise teams, with wins over Wilcox, Menlo-Atherton, St. Ignatius and Valley Christian since opening the season with a loss at Acalanes. St. Francis played a brutal non-league schedule, which included blowout losses to De La Salle and Cathedral Catholic-San Diego, and led WCAL favorite Archbishop Riordan before fading in the fourth quarter. The Lancers won their first game last week, routing Bellarmine. Mitty has lost five of its past six to St. Francis, but the win was memorable – a 42-41 overtime victory on the road in a 2022 CCS semifinal. Mitty has gotten it done this season behind running back Lazaro Faraj-Washington (734 yards, eight TDs rushing) and quarterback Joseph Engin (741 yards, nine TDs passing). Loa Tuiileila gained 125 on 11 carries and Kaimani Keanaaina had 90 yards on six for St. Francis last week. HSRatings.com projects Mitty to win 28-20. – Darren Sabedra
No. 10 Campolindo (5-0) at No. 16 Monte Vista (4-1), 7 p.m.: Two of the East Bay’s hottest teams meet in this nonleague matchup. Campolindo, led by wide receiver Everett Zellmer and running back Micah Parker, is averaging 37 points per game. Zellmer has 100 receiving yards or more in three of the team’s five games and leads the Moraga school in touchdowns with eight. Parker averages 86.8 rushing yards per game and has four touchdowns. Monte Vista’s only loss thus far was to Archbishop Riordan. Campolindo will no doubt aim to stop running back Henry Lasker, who has rushed for 541 yards and five touchdowns for Monte Vista. Quarterback Ian Ondricek has thrown for 16 TDs and Dakota Dickson has been a force as both an offensive and defensive lineman. HSRatings.com picks Monte Vista to win 34-31. – Nathan Canilao
Saturday
Oakland Tech (2-3, 0-0) vs. No. 11 McClymonds (3-2, 0-0) at Laney College, 7 p.m.: Can Oakland Tech become the first Oakland Athletic League team to beat McClymonds on the field in over 15 years? Mack has a win this season over St. Francis, but lost at California and struggled last week to beat Mt. Diablo. Tech has one-score losses to El Cerrito and Salesian – both ranked by the Bay Area News Group – and is coming off a 34-6 win at Pinole Valley. Look for quarterback and baseball star Elijah Rucker to play a factor as Tech’s top playmaker. Tech has a rangy defense led by Varnard Scott, Jose Ramos, Eric Truong and Vladimir Vassile. But defeating McClymonds will be a tall task. Quarterback Berell Staples has been solid, despite overseeing an offense that has had its share of injuries and a lack of depth. Koi Taiese has proven to be one of the Bay Area’s top defensive linemen. This game will be the nightcap of the first OAL Classic at Laney, which will also include matchups between Oakland and Skyline and Castlemont and Fremont-Oakland. HSRatings.com predicts Mack to beat Tech 35-3. – Nathan Canilao
Santa Teresa (5-0, 0-0) at Live Oak (5-0, 0-0), 7:15 p.m.: How good is Santa Teresa? We’re about to find out a lot about the Saints as they travel down to Morgan Hill this weekend. Live Oak has seen a resurgence this season after a down year in 2024. Gage Jones is the offensive focal point for the Acorns and has rushed for nearly 200 yards per game this season. Senior QB Adrian Leal is a dual-threat himself and has thrown for 130 yards a game while running for 60 per. Santa Teresa runs through senior all-purpose player Jaylen Malcom, who plays both sides of the ball and has racked up 651 all-purpose yards while snatching two interceptions, including a pick-six. HSRatings.com projects a classic, a 35-34 Saints victory. — Christian Babcock
