The Hollister Police Department said it received an emergency call around 7:50 a.m. Thursday, reporting an unresponsive infant with no pulse and no signs of breathing.
Officers arrived at the undisclosed address to find the infant unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse, police said.
The infant was taken to an area hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
Police said it appeared the infant was sleeping on a couch before being found unresponsive by a family member.
The Hollister Police Department and the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office have opened a joint investigation, which will explore all possible causes of death, including criminal negligence and sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, police said.
About 3,000 infants die each year from sudden unexpected infant death, which includes SIDS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC advises placing infants on their backs to sleep, as the position carries the lowest risk for SIDS.
“The Hollister Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and all those affected by this tragic event,” police said.
