The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, a list that’s been compiled by a British media company for nearly a quarter-century, has just announced its inaugural ranking of North America’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Ten California restaurants made the list, with SingleThread in Healdsburg ranking the highest (No. 8), and also winning Most Sustainable Restaurant and Best in the West honors. Six of the ranked restaurants are located in San Francisco, and three in Los Angeles.
Atomix in New York City ranked No. 1.
The 50 Best organization, part of the William Reed company, aims to become “the ultimate reference point for the very best hospitality experiences across the globe.” The awards were announced Thursday at a Las Vegas ceremony.
SingleThread, an upscale farm-to-table concept from chef Kyle Connaughton and farmer Katina Connaughton, holds three Michelin stars, as do three other local 50 Best honorees. They are Benu (No. 13 on this list), Atelier Crenn (No. 46) and Quince (No. 48).
The other San Francisco restaurants making the list are Californios (No. 14), Saison (No. 21) and Lazy Bear (No. 25).
The Los Angeles area honorees are Kato (No. 26), Holbox (No. 42) and Providence (No. 47).
The three-Michelin-starred French Laundry in Yountville, which topped the main 50 Best list in 2003 and 2004, has been elevated to the “Best of the Best” Hall of Fame.
How are the rankings compiled?
According to the organization, the list reflects “the best restaurant experiences collated from 300 expert voters — a balanced mix of chefs, restaurateurs, food and beverage journalists, educators and well-travelled gourmets.”

There are no cuisine or cost parameters for those judging. “Voters are simply asked to name their eight best restaurant experiences of any kind, across the initial two-year polling period.”
