Oakland man killed dog, beat boy, kidnapped woman, DA says

OAKLAND — An Oakland man has been charged with killing his girlfriend’s dog, beating her son, then kidnapping her so blatantly that witnesses saw him dragging the victim from a 71st Avenue apartment to the Coliseum BART station, court records show.

The 41-year-old man has been charged with kidnapping, child abuse and animal cruelty, court records show. He is set to be arraigned on Oct. 2 and is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail. He has also been charged with violating his parole in a prior robbery case.

The woman reportedly attempted to end their relationship a day before the assault. Police say the man slept in a chair in her bedroom that night, then attempted to talk to her about the issue the following day, but flew into a rage when she said no.

First, he allegedly slammed the woman into a wall, then hit her 17-year-old son and slammed him into a wall. Then he allegedly killed the small dog by throwing it into the ground, before dragging the woman away as she screamed, authorities said. The incident occurred on Aug. 19. Police say they located the deceased dog and documented the victims’ injuries.

After the incident was over and police had arrested the man, the woman realized he “had cut the cord to the fridge, the oven, the microwave, the television, the vacuum, and stabbed the television” inside her apartment, police said in court filings. Prosecutors charged him two days later.
