Mayor Larry Klein and city councilmembers will honor the winners of Sunnyvale’s annual Community Awards program at the State of the City celebration on Saturday, Sept. 20.

This year’s awardees are:
Contribution to the Arts – Elsa Nuñez (Folklórica dance at Columbia Middle School)
High School Student of the Year – Jacob Su (Bellarmine College Preparatory; fruitsharing.com)
Businessperson/Business of the Year – Liam Balfe (Fibbar MaGees)
Educator of the Year – Christine Penland (Columbia Middle School)
Environmental Achievement – Eric Krock (Greenspace advocate)
Volunteer of the Year – Rose Gregorio (unhoused advocate)
Distinguished Residents of the Year – Mike and Sue Serrone (community volunteers)
The city accepts award nominations from the community year-round. A panel of former Community Award recipients and current board and commission members selects the winners.
Klein will also present his selections for the Mayor’s Awards of Excellence to school board member and community volunteer Bridget Watson and Charles Street Gardens at the State of the City, set for 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave. Klein will deliver his State of the City address at approximately 9:30 a.m., followed by awards presentations and recognition of board and commission members. ‘Made in Sunnyvale’
The Heritage Park Museum’s fall exhibit touches on things the public might not know were “Made in Sunnyvale.”
The city has been home over the years to potato chip manufacturers, dairy farms and a distillery, as well as companies that made shoe polish, keys and locks, and radios.
