Gilroy: Man arrested for allegedly starting multiple vegetation fires last weekend

GILROY — Police arrested a man on suspicion of setting multiple vegetation fires last weekend, authorities said.

The suspect, a 39-year-old man, was initially arrested on suspicion of multiple drug-related charges, but he was later arrested for arson charges after making incriminating statements during his arrest, according to the Gilroy Police Department.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 6, a person flagged down a police officer to report a large vegetation fire on the north side of the 5900 block of Travel Park Circle, authorities said. When officers arrived at the scene, they found multiple fires.

The Gilroy Fire Department responded to extinguish the fires, authorities added.

An officer located the male suspect walking in the area of the vegetation fires, authorities said. The man exhibited signs of being under the influence. He also was wearing shoes with prints that were similar to prints found near the fire sites.

The man was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail.
