Week 1: Where to find our complete coverage
Here are this week’s top matchups:
Friday
No. 6 St. Francis (0-1) at No. 12 McClymonds (0-1), 7 p.m.: This was an excellent matchup last season in Mountain View, a game St. Francis won 34-14 behind 336 yards and three TDs from now-graduated star running back Kingston Keanaaina, who is currently serving his Latter-Day Saints mission before reporting to BYU to join its football team. In his stead is little brother Motu Keanaaina, a junior who led St. Francis with 46 rushing yards on 17 carries in the Lancers’ season-opening loss to Cathedral Catholic-San Diego. McClymonds is also coming off a difficult defeat, a 41-18 loss to Riordan in San Francisco. Quarterback Berell Staples, a three-star Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo commit, threw for 180 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. HSRatings.com projects a 35-14 St. Francis win. — Christian Babcock
No. 8 Los Gatos (0-1) at No. 10 Liberty (1-0), 7 p.m.: Was Los Gatos’ 42-40 loss to Soquel more indicative of Soquel’s strength, or are the Wildcats not quite as good as expected? We’ll likely find out this week. Callum Schweitzer had a strong debut as the Cats’ starter (13-24, 206 yards, four TDs) but was outplayed by Soquel QB Sam Whelan, who went 22 of 31 for 373 yards. This matchup will feature two great running backs who were both all-Bay Area News Group preseason selections. Los Gatos’ Grayson Doslak started his senior season with 161 yards rushing on 15 carries, including an 85-yard run. Liberty’s Jaxon Bell ran for 75 yards on 18 carries in the Lions’ 14-0 win over Frontier-Bakersfield – Liberty threw the ball just six times all game. HSRatings.com projects that Los Gatos will win 31-22, giving the Cats a 73% chance to prevail. — Christian Babcock
No. 15 Campolindo (1-0) at Northgate (1-0), 7 p.m.: Campo is 9-0 against Northgate since 2004, which includes a 31-22 victory last season. Both teams got their seasons started with victories last week as Campo routed Granada 42-7 and Northgate edged Tamalpais 14-7. In Campo’s win. Reid Habas passed for 170 yards and two touchdowns and Micah Parker ran for 84 yards and a touchdown. Northgate prevailed in Week 1 behind Tristan Tolerton’s 108 yards and a touchdown in 24 carries and Bryce Ballard’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Dax Gordon. A stout defense helped, too. – Darren Sabedra
San Jose (1-0) vs. Lincoln-San Jose (1-0) at San Jose City College, 7 p.m.: The annual Big Bone game, now played in early September after being a Thanksgiving Day tradition for decades, returns to San Jose City College for the latest edition of the series. Lincoln has dominated the rivalry, winning 26 in a row over San Jose since its last loss in 1997. Both teams won openers last week, with Lincoln edging Willow Glen 38-37 on Leo Molina’s 41-yard field goal with 12 seconds left and San Jose toppling Mills 22-6. Kyan Phillips ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns in Lincoln’s victory. In the past two Big Bone games, Lincoln won 45-0 in 2023 and 42-0 last season. – Darren Sabedra
Saturday
No. 1 De La Salle (1-0) at No. 5 Serra (0-1), 2 p.m.: Both teams are coming off challenging openers: De La Salle beat Lakeland (Fla.) 10-6, and Serra couldn’t quite keep up with Folsom, losing 56-42 to five-star QB Ryder Lyons. Deuce Jones-Drew had the go-ahead TD for DLS and played every snap in the Spartans’ victory, compiling 99 total yards. Serra is breaking in new starting QB Caleb Bandel, who had a mixed debut. Bandel went 14 for 26 with 235 yards and two touchdowns but also threw a crucial pick-six that allowed Folsom to ice the win. Yet the Padres showcased an explosive overall attack, with contributions from running backs Iziah Singleton and Jeovanni Henley (167 combined yards) and receiver Charles Walsh, coach Patrick Walsh’s son who had 100 yards and an 80-yard TD. HSRatings.com projects a 35-3 De La Salle victory. — Christian Babcock
