The crash happened shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday on Paseo Padre Parkway, south of Capitol Avenue.

The Fremont Police Department said the man was attempting to cross midblock while pushing a shopping cart containing personal belongings. He was near the raised center median when he was hit by one car traveling northbound and then by a second.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. The death marked the city’s fifth traffic fatality of the year.

While police did not release the man’s name, they did identify him as a resident of Fremont.

The driver of the first vehicle left the scene but returned a short time later, police said.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, but police said alcohol and drug impairment does not appear to be a factor. The driver of the first car is cooperating with the investigation.
