Man fatally shot in West Oakland

OAKLAND — A man was fatally shot in West Oakland Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Police were trying to confirm his identity.

The shooting, which prompted a gunshot detection system alert, happened about 4:43 a.m. in the 700 block of 21st Street between West and Brush streets.

Police responding to the gunshot alert did not find a victim but did find evidence of a shooting.

It turned out the man had been driven by some other people to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said

A motive for the shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been announced.

The killing is the 43rd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 57 homicides in the city.
