Man arrested in connection with East Palo Alto sexual assault

EAST PALO ALTO — Authorities on Friday arrested a 19-year-old Mountain View man on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman two days earlier in East Palo Alto.

Around 9:25 p.m. Wednesday, a patrol officer encountered a distraught woman on Newell Road, according to the East Palo Alto Police Department. The woman reported she had just been sexually assaulted while walking home, adding that the suspect escaped in a car.

Officers identified the suspect vehicle using video surveillance and safety cameras, police said.

On Friday, detectives found the car in Mountain View. They then worked with the Mountain View Police Department to stop and interview a man who got into the car, according to police.

After the interview, detectives arrested the man and booked him into San Mateo County jail on charges of sexual battery and assault with intent to commit felony sex crimes.

Police said an investigation revealed the victim and the suspect did not know each other before the assault.
