San Leandro couple dead in suspected murder/suicide after wife sought restraining order

SAN LEANDRO — A man is suspected of fatally shooting his wife before turning the gun on himself after she sought a restraining order against him, authorities said.

Police say they were called to the 700 block of Wrin Avenue in San Leandro for a welfare check, a little after midnight on June 22. The reportedly found a 64-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man dying from gunshot wounds to the head.

The man had a pistol in his hand when police found him, authorities said. His wife had reportedly been telling family members she was seeking a restraining order against him and planned to move her things out of the house. He’d allegedly threatened her in the days before the shooting.

Authorities say the restraining order was found in the home a short distance from where the man and woman were found.

The woman was hospitalized but pronounced dead three days later, on June 25. The man also survived the initial shooting but was pronounced dead on July 2, according to court records.

The woman is identified in police and court records as Lilia Garibay-Quijas. The man was Jesus Vazquez-Oropeza, according to the same records.
