San Jose: Two arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in May stabbing

SAN JOSE — Two men were arrested this month on suspicion of repeatedly stabbing a man on North Fourth Street in May in an attack where investigators had to retroactively locate the crime scene because everyone, including the victim, was gone by the time police arrived.

In the early morning hours of May 3, San Jose police officers were called to a hospital after a man walked in seeking treatment for multiple stab wounds, according to the police department.

Detectives retraced the information they gathered at the hospital, and determined that just before midnight the previous night, the victim was on the 1000 block of North Fourth Street, between East Younger and Burton avenues, when “multiple adult male suspects violently assaulted” him, police said.

The injuries left the victim unconscious, but he was taken to the hospital by witnesses, police said.

An ensuing investigation identified two men as suspects in the stabbing: Cesar Castellanos, a 42-year-old Oakland resident, and David Ramirez, a 45-year-old Salinas resident.

Both men were arrested July 24 in their home cities, and were booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Police said an unregistered handgun was recovered after search warrants were served on their homes, but did not disclose at whose house the weapon was found.

Records show Castellanos was criminally charged Monday, and has since been released from jail custody. As of Wednesday, Ramirez was being held without bail in the Main Jail and had an arraignment tentatively scheduled for Thursday, records show.
