Donald Dorn, 61, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the March 28, 2024 shooting death of 47-year-old Robert Greer. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped a murder charge against him.
Dorn was transferred to North Kern State Prison on July 24, records show. He was given about 550 days of credit for time served while the case was pending.
When he was killed, Greer was allegedly standing outside a house on the 100 block of Louvaine Avenue in East Oakland that had been abandoned by its owners and was full of squatters and stray dogs. Witnesses reportedly told police that Greer had been using a sledgehammer to bust up concrete chunks and hurl them at cars when Dorn left on a bicycle, got a revolver, and shot him.
Dorn allegedly fled after the shooting. When police got there, they counted 14 dogs in the area and called animal control. Dorn has a 2021 assault conviction, court records show.
