
This weekend hundreds, if not thousands, of automotive fans will be strolling up and down Big Basin Way to admire, ogle and covet the cool cars at the 14th annual Saratoga Classic and Cool Car Show. On Saturday, July 26, entrants will take their rides on a Cool Car Cruise through downtown Saratoga at 11:30 a.m. in preparation for the main event on Sunday, July 27.

Others prefer two legs to four wheels for getting around downtown. Many groups of walkers meet in Saratoga Village to get the day started with some exercise, then converse over coffee at one of many spots along the road: Darla Café, Mangia Mornings, Kandoo Patisserie, Teazentea and Sue’s Gallery Café among them.
One popular place is Big Basin Café at 14471 Big Basin Way. It’s known for its old-school coffeehouse vibe, vegetarian options, house-roasted organic beans, pastries, and breakfast and lunch items, and has both indoor and outdoor seating, including a dog-friendly patio.
There is a very special event coming up at Hakone Estate and Gardens. The fourth annual Toro Nagashi, or lantern floating ceremony, will be held Aug. 14-15, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees are invited to float lanterns on the koi pond in honor of loved ones and make personal wishes. The event will feature traditional Japanese Obon dancing led by recent National Endowment of the Arts honoree Reiko Iwanaga, who invites attendees to join in dancing, as “Obon is a time when we dance in gratitude of the spirits of those who have passed.” Advance tickets are $50, or $25 for Hakone members, at https://bit.ly/4fbxsPq
The annual Cancer CAREpoint garden party fundraiser is set for Aug. 24 at Nestldown. This is usually a sell-out, so make your reservations in early. Summer Movie Nights are a hit, and the last movie of the season is coming up Friday, Aug. 8, when “Finding Dory” screens for free at El Quito Park, 12855 Paseo Presada, Saratoga.
Saratoga Nights returns to the Village on Thursday, Aug. 7, hosted by the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce. The event showcases local talent, entrepreneurs and community organizations at 8 p.m. in the Saratoga Village parking lot. It features live music, pop-up vendors and family activities.
Local Keith McNulty took up a request from Jill Hunter of the Saratoga Village Gardeners to lend a helping hand while the group’s “watering guru,” Robert Woolsey, was out of town. “So many of our pots are not being watered,” Hunter wrote in an email. “If you have a pot near your store or are a resident walking the Village, please take some water and pour it on a plant.”
