Lamar Buffin, 32, was charged on July 3, and has been released from jail after posting $100,000 bail, court records show. His co-defendant, John Brumfield, 39, was charged with accessory after the fact and is also out of custody.
The case started on July 1, when a man called police to report three pimps were holding his girlfriend against her will at a hotel on Hegenberger Road in East Oakland. Officers responded to the room, located the woman and detained Buffin and Brumfield, police said.
The woman said she had met Buffin in San Francisco days earlier and he allegedly offered to “boss her life up” by making her a prostitute. She said she initially agreed but became reluctant as time went on. At the end of one day, she returned to the hotel and Buffin allegedly told her, “You think you are done? You are not,” before sexually assaulting her, authorities said.
Other times, Buffin allegedly threatened her with a gun and “physically assaulted her by being slapped in the face multiple times when she expressed refusal to work for Buffin,” police said in court filings.
The preliminary hearing, where a judge will review evidence against both men, has been set for Aug. 20.
Buffin has also been charged with possessing an amount of marijuana roughly the size of a volleyball. He has several prior felony convictions, including for conspiracy in 2014, when he was part of a case brought by Operation Ceasefire, targeting the Oakland-based Money Team gang, according to court records.
