Bay Area boy killed, 3 teens hospitalized in alleged DUI

A crash in Sonoma County killed one Marin teenager and inflicted major injuries on three others, police said.

The crash happened at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday after authorities received a report of a possible drunken driver at a gas station on Lakeville Highway, according to the Santa Rosa and Petaluma police departments.

Minutes later, police saw the vehicle, a Kia Soul, swerving in traffic and tried to stop it, but the driver kept fleeing. The Kia sideswiped one oncoming vehicle, continued down the road and then overturned near Old Lakeville Road No. 1.

Police said the four occupants were ejected. One of the passengers died, and the others were taken to hospitals with “life-threatening injuries,” the Santa Rosa Police Department said.

“All four occupants of the vehicle are juvenile males residing in Marin County,” the department said. “The relationship between the juveniles is part of the ongoing investigation. Detectives also learned the Kia Sol had recently been stolen out of Marin County.”

The occupants of the vehicle that got sideswiped were not injured.

The passenger who died was Aldo Rodriguez Cazarez, 14, of Novato, according to the Sonoma County coroner’s bureau. An autopsy is planned for Monday.

The other two passengers are 15 and 16. The driver is 17.

The three survivors were in stable condition Sunday, police said.

Police plan to book the driver into youth jail after he is released from the hospital. The counts are vehicular manslaughter; evading police and causing death or injury; and intoxicated driving causing death or great injury.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and the Santa Rosa Police Department is investigating the circumstances before it.
