The fraud involved people pretending to be representatives of Apple, Wells Fargo and federal agencies, Sausalito police Capt. Brian Mather said. The victim received a text message reporting a suspicious charge and directed her to call a particular phone number. When she did, she was told her bank account was “compromised” and under investigation.

The scammers instructed the victim to hand $25,000 in cash to a courier who visited her home. The supposed purpose for the money was to help recover funds and protect the victim from more fraud, Mather said.

Later, the victim was preparing to hand over another $25,000 payment and decided to contact police. Investigators arrested the suspect Thursday after the second money pickup.

Jasvir Singh, 35, was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of embezzlement from an elderly person and obtaining money by false pretenses. His bail amount was set at $50,000. He has been released on bail pending a review by prosecutors.

Attempts to reach Singh were unsuccessful.
