
A Soquel man was killed Wednesday when he crashed his electric bike on a road near the Watsonville airport, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported around 1:30 p.m. July 9 on Manfre Road near Larkin Valley Road, in the community of Freedom
The 78-year-old man had been eastbound on a Class 3 e-bike when he went off the two-lane road and hit an embankment, the CHP said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The CHP did not identify the man or say whether he was wearing a helmet.
The motor assist on a Class 3 e-bike tops out at 28 mph and requires that the driver be pedaling.
