OAKLAND — A fire at an RV in a homeless encampment early Friday injured a woman, temporarily shut down BART service and created a billow of smoke that could be seen for miles, officials said.

The blaze started about 6:25 a.m. at the encampment on 5th Street near Union Street, according to fire officials. A woman living inside an RV at the camp got out of the vehicle on her own and was taken by ambulance to a hospital after paramedics treated her at the scene.
Officials did not have an immediate update on her condition.
The fire caused BART to close down service in all directions at the West Oakland station because of the smoke that was billowing up from the blaze, according to agency spokesperson Chris Filippi. The agency restored service by 7 a.m. after fire crews extinguished the fire and BART inspectors made sure the tracks were OK, Filippi said.
Residual delays of 20 minutes on BART were expected in the aftermath.
