Victims identified in Lake Tahoe tragedy that killed eight

The El Dorado Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday identified the eight deceased victims of the boating tragedy at Lake Tahoe on Saturday, which was supposed to be part of a birthday celebration, when an unusual summer storm led to 8-foot waves and 45 mph gusts of wind.

The sheriff’s office said the victims are Paula Bozinovich, 71, from Redwood City; Terry Pickles, 73, from Redwood City;
Joshua Antony Pickles, 37, from San Francisco; Peter Bayes, 72, from Lincoln, Calif.; Timothy O’Leary, 71, from Auburn, Calif.; Theresa Giullari, 66, from Honeoye, New York; James Guck, 69, from Honeoye, New York; and Stephen Lindsay, 63, from Springwater, New York.

The group had gone out to celebrate Bozinovich’s birthday, according to a statement from her daughter-in-law, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard. Sugar-Carlsgaard is the widow of Josh Pickles, Bozinovich and Terry Pickles are his parents, and Bayes is his uncle. Sugar-Carlsgaard released a statement remarking on the loss of her husband and members of his family.

“We are devastated by this tragedy. We lost my loving husband, Josh Pickles, his parents, Terry Pickles and Paula Bozinovich, and Uncle Peter Bayes, as well as friends in this tragedy,” Sugar-Carlsgaard wrote. “No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time on the lake. Our hearts go out to those who tragically lost their lives and the two survivors of this unexpected and deadly storm on Lake Tahoe.”

Pickles and Sugar-Carlsgaard married in Colorado on Aug. 26, 2023. Pickles was the head of strategic sourcing at DoorDash and was scheduled to speak at a conference next June.

Dianne Lindsay, a real estate agent in Henrietta, New York, is the sister of Stephen Lindsay. She remembered him on Tuesday with a comment on Facebook.

“There are no words to describe the numbness and heartbreak that my family is feeling from the tragic boating accident in Lake Tahoe,” Lindsay said. “The hole in our hearts will never be made full again. My brother was the most amazing person. We cannot stop crying. We miss him so much! God bless every family involved with everyone on this boat.”
