The crash was reported around 9:55 p.m.

The Santa Cruz man had reportedly been stopped in his Honda Element SUV on the east side of the highway at Sugarloaf Road, about 4 miles south of the summit. He then drove into the path of traffic in the northbound lanes.

The SUV struck a northbound Tesla Model Y driven by a 19-year-old man from Antioch. The Tesla was rear-ended by a Honda Accord driven by a 24-year-old man from Daly City.

Drivers who stopped at the scene gave first-aid treatment to the SUV’s driver before emergency crews arrived, but the man died. His name was not released.

Four other people suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital, the CHP said.

The CHP said Sunday that the cause of the collision was still under investigation.
