The attack happened shortly before 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, the Monterey County sheriff’s office said.

Witnesses reportedly told deputies and state parks officers that two boats had collided in the harbor and that their operators began fighting after one man climbed onto the other’s boat.

One of the combatants was hit with a stick, fell into the water and did not emerge, they said.

Around 1:20 p.m., a dive team recovered the body. The man was identified as Trenten Paul Black, 26, of Aptos, the sheriff’s office said.

The man whom witnesses identified as the other boat’s operator was detained for questioning. No arrest was made on Wednesday.

The Monterey County sheriff’s coroner’s office will conduct a forensic examination to determine Black’s cause of death.
