San Jose: DUI arrest for driver after crash kills passenger on Tully Road

SAN JOSE — A driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after an early morning crash on Tully Road that killed one of his passengers, police said.

The crash was reported around 1:50 a.m. in the 800 block of Tully Road, in front of the Tully Community Branch Library, according to San Jose police. An initial investigation found that a man driving an eastbound blue 2015 Toyota sedan traveled off the roadway near Galveston Avenue and hit a tree.

Two women riding in the car were taken to a hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead, police said. Her name was not publicly released pending her formal identification and notification of her next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

The second passenger is expected to survive her injuries. The driver was treated at the crash site for minor injuries before he was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI, police said.

Police closed eastbound Tully Road between Galveston Avenue and Senter Road for nearly six hours while traffic investigators examined the site.

Wednesday’s crash marks the city’s 12th traffic death of the year; San Jose had recorded 20 roadway deaths at the same point in 2024, according to data compiled by this news organization.
