Hsi Huang told a detective she was sleeping when her daughter’s screams woke her up.
She saw Chen Chen Fei lying in a pool of blood in her own San Dimas home.
Then her daughter’s spouse swung a Japanese sword toward the mother several times, she said.

The 73-year-old mom, who was injured in the July 18, 2024, attack, was able to get the sword away from Weichien Huang, who is now 45.
“She said she was able to grab the blade with her hands as she (the spouse) was swinging it toward her neck area,” sheriff’s Detective Jennifer Valenzuela testified during Weichien Huang’s preliminary hearing on Tuesday, June 10, at Pomona Superior Court.
Weichien Huang is charged with killing the 47-year-old Fei with the sword at their home in the 300 block of South Huntington Avenue. A sheriff’s sergeant at the time described the weapon as a katana, a type of Japanese sword.
She was also charged with the attempted murder of Fei’s mother, corporal injury on a spouse, and destroying or damaging a cellphone to prevent notifying police or other help.
Weichien Huang has pleaded not guilty.
Detective Valenzuela testified that Hsi Huang told her the couple had been arguing about divorce papers Weichien Huang served recently to Fei.
Weichien Huang and Fei had been arguing on July 18, according to sheriff’s officials.
On July 18 last year, the Sheriff’s Department received a call around 3:20 p.m. about a woman with cuts on her leg and bleeding.
Deputies found Hsi Huang injured and carrying the sword, which she dropped. They found Fei’s body.
They also found Weichien Huang in the house, not injured.
The charges of corporal injury to a spouse and destroying or damaging a cellphone stem from what happened at the couple’s home on May 15, 2023, when Weichien Huang is accused of throwing a cellphone during an argument at Fei’s face and then at the ground, breaking it, when the wife said she was going to call 911.
Judge Mike Camacho found there was sufficient evidence for Weichien Huang to go to trial. She will return to court on June 25.
Booking records show she was being held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles without the possibility of bail.
