OAKLAND — A pedestrian was killed Wednesday night in East Oakland when he was struck by a vehicle that California Highway Patrol ground units had stopped pursuing on city streets moments earlier, authorities said.
A woman with the man was critically injured and the suspected driver was arrested, authorities said.
The name of the man killed, who police said was an Oakland resident in his 40s, was not immediately released.
Oakland police said Thursday the vehicle, an Infiniti G35, had been pursued by ground units of the CHP. It was not immediately known why the car was being pursued.
The CHP ground pursuit was terminated after the Infiniti hit a vehicle at Park Boulevard and East 21st Street and kept going. But the Infiniti continued to be tracked by a CHP plane, authorities said.
Approximately three minutes later, about 7:41 p.m., the Infiniti driver lost control and struck the man and the woman, also in her 40s, who were walking together on a sidewalk near the intersection of East 21st Street and 12th Avenue, more than five blocks away, police said.
The man was pronounced deceased at the scene and the woman was transported to a hospital. Their relationship was not immediately known.
The driver tried to run away but was arrested by CHP officers responding to the scene, authorities said.
Oakland police said it does not appear at this time that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The suspected driver is an 18-year-old Oakland resident who does not have a valid drivers license, police said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries and was later placed under arrest.
Oakland police asked anyone with information about what happened to contact traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
The CHP said it expected to release information about what happened later Thursday.
