California boy accused of using flare gun to fatally shoot man

A man was fatally shot with a flare gun in Huntington Beach on Friday night, May 23, and a boy was arrested on suspicion of murder after fleeing the scene, police said.

Around 8:40 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting near Florida Street and Utica Avenue, the Huntington Beach Police Department said. They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound caused by a flare gun.

Paramedics transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

A flare gun is a handgun that discharges flares, blanks and smoke. Details about what was fired out of the gun were not provided.

The suspect initially fled the scene, police said in a news release, but was quickly located by officers. He was only identified as a male minor, with his name withheld due to his age. His specific age was not given.

The flare gun police believe was used in the shooting was found at the scene, the release said.

What led to the shooting remains under investigation.
