Summer splash: San Jose’s CaliBunga dives into its second season

Set to open June 14 for the warm-weather season, the 23-acre water park formerly known as Raging Waters — now CaliBunga — is readying for its second summer operated by California Dreamin’ Entertainment.

This summer, the park will have all of the old favorites — like its 350,000-gallon wave pool, lazy river and waterslides — plus a few new improvements, according to General Manager Mel Sells.

Returning are classic thrill rides like Shotgun Falls, which involves a 10-foot free fall from a slide into a pool of water, and Dragon’s Den, alongside more mellow splashes at the kid-centric Wacky Water Works or Pirate’s Cove play areas.

Cabana rentals now come with a “lounge genie,” a cooler with lockable storage and phone-charging capacity. And candy lovers of all ages can get excited about the new Skittles vending machine onsite, plus a cotton candy machine that allows users to pick the shape and color of their cotton candy treats.

Last summer, California Dreamin’ Entertainment made upgrades amounting to about $6 million after Palace Entertainment vacated its lease two years early. The new owners added a wading pool, artificial turf, about 2,000 new chairs, and new shade structures, according to Sells. The theme park also invested in infrastructure enhancements and staff break facilities.

Pro tip: The park is cashless, so bring a credit or debit card for an expedited experience. Tickets are at their lowest cost when purchased online, and military members and teachers are eligible for additional discounts, according to Sells.

Another secret? The water park is a youngster-approved way to score some naturally phone-free family time, Sells says.

“Bring your sunscreen and towel, and get ready to have a good time,” she adds.

Details: Open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. daily June 14-Aug. 6, then weekends until Sept. 7 at 2333 S White Road, San Jose. Tickets are $34-$60 online and $50-66 at the front gate, depending on the day and visitors’ age; children 2 and under are free. Season pass packages are $79-$130.
