The stoppage began about 5:45 a.m. and was still in effect at 8:00 a.m. with no estimation for when service would be renewed.
BART officials said the stoppage, which impacted the Blue, Green and Orange lines, was a result of a fire under the trackway.
BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. She said BART cable has been damaged and that the fire was on aerial tracks starting from right underneath the tracks but not at ground level.
Other BART lines, including through the transbay tube, were not impacted.
Commuters were advised to seek alternate forms of transportation. BART officials said Alameda-Contra Costa Transit is providing help for commuters stranded between the Lake Merritt and Fremont stations while the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is offering to aid travelers between the Milpitas and Berryessa stations.
