UNION CITY — A man suspected of punching a woman inside an apartment while holding a knife was arrested early Tuesday after a more than nine-hour standoff with police, authorities said.
The suspect, Navroop Sandhu, 34, of Fremont, was arrested about 5:47 a.m. Tuesday by members of the police SWAT team after he was shot with a bean bag round and bitten by a police canine.
After treatment for minor injuries, he was booked at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of battery on a person, exhibiting a deadly weapon while resisting arrest, trespassing and resisting arrest. He was being held in lieu of $70,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
Police said that about 8:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to the Parkside Apartments, 1501 Decoto Road, in response to a report of a battery involving a weapon. Upon arrival, officers determined Sandhu had allegedly punched a woman inside an apartment while armed with a knife.
Police said Sandhu is related to the woman, but did not say how. She suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
Officers were able to successfully evacuate the woman and other occupants of the apartment within a short period of time. Sandhu allegedly brandished a knife at officers and refused police commands to exit the apartment, police said.

Due to the threat posed by his refusal to surrender, authorities said, the SWAT team was activated and responded to the scene.
After hours of negotiation and de-escalation efforts, Sandhu eventually exited the apartment, still armed with the knife, police said. He ignored commands to surrender and was arrested after officers fired a bean bag round at him and he was bitten by a police canine.
The suspect sustained minor injuries during the incident and was medically cleared prior to being booked at Santa Rita Jail. No officers were injured during the incident, police said Tuesday afternoon.
