REDWOOD CITY – A driver reportedly hit and injured a 17-year-old pedestrian last week in Redwood City after appearing to suffer a “debilitating medical event,” police said.

The collision happened at 12:10 p.m. on May 5 in the 2700 block of El Camino Real, according to the Redwood City Police Department.
The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital, where they were listed in critical condition. The driver, identified as a 64-year-old Menlo Park resident, was also taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
After speaking with witnesses and collecting video evidence, officers determined the driver ran a red light and hit the pedestrian, who was in a crosswalk, police said.
The driver did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to police.
“Medical personnel on scene opined it appeared the driver suffered a debilitating medical event immediately preceding the collision,” police said in a news release Monday. “Blood samples were collected in this case and will be processed for evaluation.”
