Body discovered at Santa Cruz beach a week after UCSC student went missing

SANTA CRUZ — A body washed up at Its Beach in Santa Cruz Friday, almost a week after a swimmer disappeared beneath the waves after cliff jumping in the area.

The Santa Cruz Police Department confirmed on its social media page that it received a call around 2:13 p.m. about a body that was discovered at the popular West Cliff Drive destination.

The statement from the local law enforcement agency did not tie the discovery of the body to the incident from last weekend and noted that the victim’s identity is pending verification from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Coroner.

First responders from several agencies in the area were dispatched around 4:45 p.m. Sunday to the area around Lighthouse Field State Beach after getting calls about two swimmers that were in distress after jumping into the ocean from a coastal bluff. One of the individuals was able to safely self-extricate while the other never emerged from the water.

Officials carried out an extensive search of the coastline, but the units, unable to find the second individual, eventually pulled back.

A spokesperson for UC Santa Cruz confirmed that the missing individual from Sunday’s incident was a student at the university.

“We are heartbroken to learn about the tragic death of a UC Santa Cruz undergraduate student,” the spokesperson wrote in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. We are in touch with the family and are providing support to others who are impacted. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we are not sharing the student’s name.”

Information about counseling and psychological services for impacted students can be found at caps.ucsc.edu. UCSC’s Slug Support and Employee Assistance Program are also available.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
