Crews responded about 9 p.m. to the explosion on Silveria Way. Investigators have not determined whether the fire pit was a wood or gas one or why it exploded, Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesperson Fire Prevention Capt. Joe Ottolini said.
The injured suffered second- and third-degree burns to their upper extremities and facial areas, according to Ottolini. One went by air ambulance to the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center at UC Davis. The other two went to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
The status of the injured people wasn’t known Friday afternoon.
A fourth person at the scene escaped injury.
