
ANTIOCH — Contra Costa prosecutors have charged a 51-year-old man with two felonies after his 3-year-old grandson accessed a gun and fatally shot himself by accident, court records show.

Jamal Edward, of Antioch, was issued a notice to appear in court on June 3 to answer criminal charges of child abuse or cruelty and improper storage of firearms, both felonies. Edward has not been arrested, records show.
The fatal shooting occurred on April 8. Officers were called to a residence on Clearbrook Road off Lone Tree Way about 6 p.m. after callers reported a shooting to the dispatch center. The boy died at the scene, police said at the time.
Police haven’t said exactly how the boy accessed the gun, but a spokesman for the department implied it was loose in the home, calling it a “heartbreaking” incident.
