OAKLAND — Police recently arrested a 33-year-old man who allegedly shot and killed a man during a botched robbery early Saturday morning in Oakland’s Uptown district.
Authorities jailed Jashawndre Upshaw in the fatal shooting of Roosevelt Jones, according to Oakland Police Department Deputy Chief Fred Shavies, who announced the arrest in a press conference Thursday afternoon.
Upshaw was booked into the Santa Rita Jail, where he remains held without bail.
Investigators suspect Upshaw shot Jones while trying to rob him at about 12:40 a.m. Saturday on the 500 block of 18th Street, according to court records. They zeroed in on Upshaw as a suspect after talking to witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage, court records show. Later that night, an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy found Upshaw’s vehicle in Hayward, Shavies said.
Officers arrested Upshaw two days later on the 2900 block of Brookdale Avenue in East Oakland, records show. Alameda County prosecutors later charged him with a slew of felonies, including murder and attempted robbery.
Police claim Upshaw acknowledged being in the area of the shooting early Saturday morning, but he denied being involved in the robbery, according to court records.
Another person was arrested while officers investigated the killing, police said, and prosecutors later charged him with several gun-related offenses.
The killing marked the 26th death investigated by Oakland police as a homicide so far this year.
